tono

/ˈtono/ · B1 · noun · m

tone

🎵 tono = tone + o; both come from Latin tonus, a stretched string

Greek tonos meant stretching. A tighter string gives a higher pitch, which is how the word came to mean tone. Spanish just added the usual masculine -o: el tono, as in tono de voz (tone of voice).
