tienda
/ˈtjenda/ · A2 · noun · f
shop, store
⛺🏪 tienda = tent: from Latin tendere, to stretch; early shops were market tents
Tienda comes from Latin tendere (to stretch), the same root as English tent and tension. A tent is stretched cloth, and market sellers once traded under such awnings, so the word grew to mean shop. Tent and tienda are cousins.
