tatuaje

/taˈtwaxe/ · B1 · noun · m

tattoo

💉🎨 From Tahitian tatau, to mark skin. Say ta-TWA-heh; the j is a throaty h

Captain Cook brought tatau back from Tahiti, and English made it tattoo. Spanish adds the -aje ending, as in viaje and garaje, which makes it masculine: el tatuaje. The j sounds like a harsh h, so the end is -heh.
