tapa
/ˈtapa/ · B1 · noun · f
lid
🫙 Tapas began as a slice of bread used as a lid over a glass of wine
Bar food tapas got their name from tapar, to cover: a snack laid on top of a drink to keep flies out. Tapa probably shares a Germanic root with English tap, a plug for a barrel, so it is anything that closes the top.
