sierra
/ˈsjera/ · B1 · noun · f
saw
🪚⛰️ A sierra is a mountain range with a jagged top, like the teeth of a saw
From Latin serra, saw. The word for the tool came first, and Spanish reused it for mountain ranges because their uneven peaks line up like saw teeth. Sawfish is pez sierra. English took the word from Spanish, as in Sierra Nevada.
