ruina

/ˈrwina/ · B1 · noun · f

laying waste

🏚️ ruina = English ruin + -a, from Latin ruere, to fall down or collapse

Latin ruina meant a collapse, from ruere, to rush down or tumble. Spanish kept the word almost unchanged. Two sounds: r-WEE-na, with the u gliding into the i. Like ruins in English, it covers broken buildings and also a person's downfall, as in estar en la ruina, to be broke.
