rojo

/ˈroxo/ · A2 · adj

red

🌹 rojo sounds like rosy with a throaty h: RO-ho, and rosy cheeks are red

From Latin russus (red), the same root behind English russet and rouge. The Spanish j is a rough h sound, so say RO-ho. In Costa Rica a rojo is also the red 1000 colón bill, and in Chile a rojo is a failing grade, written in red ink.
