respetar = respect + -ar: same Latin root, re- (back) + specere (look)
From Latin respectare, to look back at, the same source as English respect. Swap the English ending -ect for -etar and you have the Spanish verb. The c dropped out in Spanish, so it is respetar, not respectar.
