🕸️ From Latin rete (net), the root of English reticule and retina
Spanish red comes from Latin rete, meaning net. English kept the same root in reticule (a small netted bag), reticulated (net-patterned) and retina (the net-like layer of the eye). It has no link to the colour red, which is rojo.
