quizá

/kiˈθa/ · A1 · adv

perhaps, maybe

From Latin qui sapit = who knows; quizá is a shrug of who knows

Old Spanish quiçab(e) came from Latin qui sapit, literally who knows. The ending wore away, leaving quizá (also quizás). So every time you say it, you are really answering with who knows: perhaps, maybe.
