Latin pala = spade; English palette comes from its diminutive
Spanish kept the Latin word pala, spade, unchanged. Italian paletta, little shovel, became the painter's palette in English. Pala also means any flat blade: the end of an oar, a ping-pong paddle, the upper of a shoe.
