pájaro
/ˈpaxaɾo/ · A2 · noun · m
bird
🐦 From Latin passer (sparrow) — same root as English passerine, a perching bird
Latin passer (sparrow) became Old Spanish pássaro, then pájaro; Spanish widened it from sparrow to any small bird. English kept the root in passerine, the term for perching birds. Portuguese pássaro is the sister word.
