orilla
/oˈɾiʝa/ · B1 · noun · f
shore
🏞️ Latin ora (edge, coast) + -illa (little) = a little edge of land
Latin ōra meant edge, rim or coastline. Spanish added the diminutive -illa, giving orilla: the strip of land where water ends. The same root gives English orle, a border on a coat of arms. Watch the double L, which sounds like a y.
