mitad

/miˈtad/ · A2 · noun · f

one-half

🍕 mitad = Latin medietas (middle-ness), cousin of English moiety and mid

Latin medietas wore down to mitad: the d of medi- hardened to t, and -tas became -tad, as in libertas → libertad. The mi- at the front is the same root as mid and medio, so mitad is the mid-point share: half.
