miles
/ˈmiles/ · A2 · noun · m
thousand
miles = plural of mil (1000), from Latin mille, as in millennium
Mil is one thousand; add -es and you get miles, thousands. Same Latin root mille gives English millennium (1000 years) and mile (1000 Roman paces). Beware: it looks like English miles but means thousands, not distance.
