miedo
/ˈmjedo/ · A1 · noun · m
fear
😱 From Latin metus (fear); kin to English meticulous = fearful of error
Latin metus became Spanish miedo: the t softened to d and the e broke into ie. English meticulous comes from the same root and originally meant fearful, timid. Tener miedo = to have fear, i.e. to be afraid.
