mas
/mas/ · A1 · conj
but
mas (no accent) = but; más (accent) = more. Same Latin root: magis
Both come from Latin magis (more). The accented más kept the meaning more; the unaccented mas drifted to but, like English moreover turning a thought. It is literary: everyday Spanish uses pero instead.
