llegar

/ʝeˈɡaɾ/ · A1 · verb

to arrive, get

🚪 From Latin plicare, to fold: sailors folded the sails on arriving in port

Latin pl- became Spanish ll-, as in pluvia > lluvia and plenus > lleno, so plicare gave llegar. Folding the sails meant the voyage was over. The same reaching sense covers money or time that reaches far enough: to be enough.
