isla
/ˈisla/ · A2 · noun · f
island
🏝️ isla = isle + a; from Latin insula, which also gave English insulate
Latin insula lost its n to become Spanish isla and English isle. Insulate and isolate come from the same root: to make into an island. In Latin, insula also meant a city block, which is why isla keeps that second sense.
