indio

/ˈindjo/ · A2 · adj

Indian

indio = India + -o: Columbus thought he had reached India, so the name stuck

From India, named after the river Indus. Columbus believed he had landed in the Indies, so Spanish used indio for the peoples of the Americas too. Sounds almost like English Indian with the ending swapped for -o: IN-dyo.
