huir

/ˈw̝iɾ/ · A2 · verb

to flee, to run away

🏃 huir = from Latin fugere, to flee; same root as fugitive and refuge

Latin fugere became Spanish huir: the initial f- softened to a silent h, as in facere > hacer. English kept the f in fugitive, refuge and centrifuge. A fugitive is someone who has chosen to huir.
