huérfano
/ˈw̝eɾfano/ · B1 · adj
orphan
Same root as orphan: Greek orphanos became Spanish huérfano
Latin orphanus came from Greek orphanos. In Spanish, a stressed o often became ue (like puerta from porta), and an h was added before ue at the start of a word. So orph- became huérf-. Strip the h-ue and you can still see orphan.
