hormiga
/hoˈɾmi.ɡa/ [hoɾˈmi.ɣ̞a] · B2 · noun · f
ant
🐜 Latin formica → hormiga: Spanish swapped the f for an h, as in formic acid
Formic acid is named after ants, from Latin formica. Spanish often turned a Latin f into a silent h: facere → hacer, filius → hijo. Do the same to formica and you get hormiga.
