hembra
/ˈembɾa/ · B1 · noun · f
female
From Latin femina (female): Spanish turned initial F into H, femina → hembra
Same F→H shift as filius → hijo. Femina lost its middle vowel, and mn became mbr, just as hominem → hombre. So hembra and hombre are a matching pair. Mostly used for animals and plugs; for women, Spanish says mujer.
