gitano

/xiˈtano/ · B2 · adj

Gypsy

gitano comes from egiptano (Egyptian), just as Gypsy comes from Egyptian

Europeans once wrongly thought the Romani people came from Egypt, so Spanish clipped egiptano to gitano and English clipped Egyptian to Gypsy. Both words can be offensive; the respectful term is romaní or Roma.
