girar
/xiˈɾaɾ/ · B1 · verb
to turn, pivot
🌀 girar = gyrate: both from Latin gyrare, to turn in a circle
Spanish girar and English gyrate, gyroscope and gyre all come from Latin gyrare, from Greek gyros (circle, ring). The same root names the gyro, meat cooked on a rotating spit. Swap gyr- for gir- and you have the Spanish verb.
