galaxia

/ɡaˈlaɡsja/ · B1 · noun · f

galaxy

🌌🥛 From Greek gala, meaning milk: the Milky Way was the first galaxy

The Greeks called our galaxy galaxias kyklos, the milky circle, from gala (milk). The same root gives Spanish láctea, as in Vía Láctea, and English lactose. The x is said like ks, so it sounds like ga-LAK-sya.
