fijar
/fiˈxaɾ/ · A2 · verb
to fix, fasten, set, establish, determine
📌 fijar = to fix: Latin fixus (fastened), same root as English fix and affix
Spanish turned the Latin x into j, so fix- became fij-. Swap the j back to x and you get fixar, nearly English fix. The adjective fijo (fixed, steady) follows the same pattern, as does prefijo = prefix.
