escudo
/esˈkudo/ · B1 · noun · m
shield
🛡️ From Latin scutum, shield; English kept it as escutcheon
Latin scutum was the Roman legionary's shield. Spanish turned it into escudo, and English borrowed it through French as escutcheon, the shield on a coat of arms. Portugal's old currency, the escudo, was named after the shield stamped on its coins.
