escapar

/eskaˈpaɾ/ · A2 · verb

to run away, get away, slip away, flee

🏃 escapar = escape + -ar: the English word with a Spanish verb ending

Both come from Late Latin excappare: ex (out of) + cappa (cloak) — to slip out of your cloak and leave it in the pursuer's hands. Spanish kept the Latin shape; English borrowed it through Old French. Swap -e for -ar and you have the verb.
