ella

/ˈeʝa/ · A1 · pron

she, her

From Latin illa (that woman) — the same root that gave Spanish la

Latin illa meant that one (feminine). Its double l became the Spanish ll sound, giving ella. The masculine ille became él the same way, so él and ella are a matched pair: add -la for she.
