during, in, over

⏳ durante = dur- (to last, as in duration, endure) + -ante (-ing): lasting

From Latin durans, the -ing form of durare, to last. English during is built the same way from the old verb dure. So durante la noche is literally the night lasting: during the night, or for a stretch of time.
