dudar

/duˈdaɾ/ · A2 · verb

to doubt

dudar = doubt: both from Latin dubitare, to waver between two (duo)

Latin dubitare comes from dubius, built on duo (two): being of two minds. English doubt kept the silent b; Spanish dropped it and got dudar. Same root gives dubious and Spanish duda (a doubt).
