disculpar
/diskulˈpaɾ/ · A1 · verb
to excuse, forgive, pardon
dis- + culpa (blame) = to un-blame: remove the guilt, so excuse or forgive
From Latin culpa, fault or blame, the same root as English culprit and culpable. The prefix dis- undoes it, so disculpar lifts the blame off someone. The reflexive disculparse means to apologize: clearing yourself of blame.
