desgraciado
/desɡɾaˈθjado/ · B1 · adj
unfortunate
des- (un) + gracia (grace) + -ado: dis-graced, out of luck
Gracia means grace or good fortune; des- removes it. So a desgraciado is someone without grace: either luckless (unfortunate, wretch) or graceless in character (jerk, creep). Same roots as English disgraced.
