congelar
/konxeˈlaɾ/ · B1 · verb
to freeze
🧊 Same Latin root as congeal and gelato: con- + gelare, to freeze solid
Latin gelu meant frost. Con- (together) + gelare gave congelare, to freeze something solid, which is also where English congeal comes from. Italian gelato is literally frozen. Spanish adds the -ar verb ending: congelar.
