concluir

/konˈklwiɾ/ · B2 · verb

to conclude

🏁 con + cluir: from Latin concludere, to shut together, so to wrap up and close

Con means together and cluir comes from claudere, to shut. To conclude is to shut a matter completely. The same sense of closing off explains the other meanings: to overwhelm an opponent until they have no reply, and so to silence them.
