comprometer
/kompɾomeˈteɾ/ · B1 · verb
to promise, to engage to be married
💍 com- (together) + prometer (to promise) = to promise mutually
From Latin compromittere: two parties promised each other to accept an arbiter's verdict. A mutual promise binds you, as an engagement does. Binding yourself can also expose you, so comprometer also means to put at risk.
