From Latin centum, like cent, century and percent
A cent is one hundredth of a dollar, and a century is a hundred years. Use ciento before smaller numbers, as in ciento uno (101), and cien on its own or before nouns, as in cien libros. Ciento also gives cientos, meaning hundreds.
