ayuntamiento

/aʝuntaˈmjento/ · B1 · noun · m

city council

🏛️ ayuntar = to join (like adjunct, junction) + -miento: the town's joining-up

From old Spanish ayuntar, to join or assemble, from Latin adiunctare. It meant a meeting of joined members first, then the council that meets, and then the building it meets in, the town hall. The -miento ending works like English -ment.
