ace

as — ace

🂡 as = ace: both come from the Latin as, a Roman coin worth one unit

A Roman as was the one-unit coin. That 'one' sense passed to dice and cards, so the single-pip card became the ace. Spanish kept the Latin form as, and also uses it for a top performer: un as del volante (an ace at the wheel).
