arena
/aˈɾena/ · B1 · noun · f
sand
🏟️⏳ Etymology: Latin harena = sand, the floor of every Roman arena
Roman amphitheatres had sand floors to soak up blood, so the word for sand came to mean the fighting ground itself. In Spanish, arena still means sand first, and then the bullring or boxing ring built on it.
