ala

/ˈala/ · B1 · noun · f

wing

🪽 Latin ala = wing; the same root gives English aisle, the wing of a building

Latin ala meant wing and also armpit, the joint where a wing attaches. English kept it in aisle (a side wing of a church) and in the anatomical term ala. Spanish extended it to anything that juts out sideways: plane wings and hat brims.
