/axeˈdɾeθ/ · B1 · noun · m
chess
♟️ From Arabic ash-shitranj, from Sanskrit chaturanga: chess
Arabic al-shatranj became Old Spanish axedrez, with the x said like the Spanish j. The ash- at the start became aje-, and shitranj wore down to -drez. The game and its name both came to Spain through al-Andalus.
