él

/ˈel/ · A1 · pron

he, him, masculine personal third person subject and disjunctive pronoun

él = he, with an accent; el = the, without. Same Latin root: ille (that one)

Both él and el come from Latin ille, meaning that one. Spanish writes the accent only to tell the pronoun apart from the article: él habla = he speaks, el libro = the book. After prepositions it also means him: con él = with him.
