🏥 患者 = suffer/illness (환) + person (자): the one who is ill
환 (患) means affliction or illness, as in 환부 (affected area) and 질환 (disease). 자 (者) is the person-suffix seen in 기자 (reporter) and 학자 (scholar). So 환자 is literally the afflicted person: a patient.
