👵 할머니 = 할 (from 한, great/big) + 어머니 (mother): great-mother
한 once meant big or great; it wore down to 할 before 어머니 (mother), which then shortened to 머니. Same pattern gives 할아버지 (grandfather) = great + father. Learn 어머니 and 아버지 and both grandparents come for free.
