to be necessary, needed
必要 = must (必) + require (要) + 하다 (to be): must-require = necessary
필요 is the Sino-Korean reading of 必要, the same word as Chinese bìyào and Japanese hitsuyō. 필 (必) means must, as in 필수 (essential); 요 (要) means require, as in 요구 (demand). Adding 하다 turns the noun need into the descriptive verb to be necessary.
