찌개

jjigae · TOPIK 1

Korean stew

🍲 jjigae = jji (steam/simmer, as in jjim) + gae (noun ending: a thing)

The jji is the same root as 찌다, to steam, also found in 찜 (jjim, steamed dish). The ending 개 turns a verb into a thing, as in 지우개 (eraser) and 베개 (pillow). So jjigae is literally a simmered thing, which is why it names every stew: kimchi-jjigae, doenjang-jjigae.
