죄송합니다

joesonghamnida · TOPIK 1

I'm sorry (formal)

죄송 = 罪悚 (guilt + dread) + 합니다 (formal do): I feel guilty and uneasy

죄송 comes from the Sino-Korean 罪悚: 罪 (joe, guilt or fault) plus 悚 (song, fearful unease). 합니다 is the formal polite ending of 하다, to do. So the phrase literally states that you feel at fault, which is why it is the formal apology.
